A weekend at Nagambie does not have to stay in Nagambie. Within 45 minutes there is a lookout with 360 degree views, winery hamlets, river towns and a shed full of tanks. These are the drives that earn the detour.
01Kirwans Bridge
The historic timber bridge over the Goulburn arm, fifteen minutes northwest, is one of the longest of its kind and photogenic in a weathered way. It has been closed to all traffic since the 2022 floods while funding for restoration is sought, so this is a look-from-the-bank stop, paired with quiet riverbank fishing nearby; see the hot spots guide.
02Strathbogie Ranges and Mt Wombat
The granite high country southeast of town. Mt Wombat lookout rewards the drive with 360 degree views across the Goulburn Valley, best after rain clears; check road conditions with Strathbogie Shire before taking the gravel sections.
03Murchison
Twenty minutes north along the Goulburn: a pretty river town with its own history, the Longleat Estates winery for lunch (see the wineries guide), and the Goulburn riverside camping country between the towns (see camping).
04Euroa and Avenel
East on the Hume side: Euroa for strand-street charm under the Strathbogies, Avenel for Fowles Wine's cellar door and restaurant, covered in the wineries guide.
05Army Tank Museum, Puckapunyal
About half an hour away, and genuinely good, but it sits inside the Puckapunyal Army base and opens to the public on set days only, so check current opening arrangements before you drive.
