Murchison

Visiting Murchison from Nagambie: twenty minutes north on the Goulburn, with Longleat Estates for lunch, riverside walks, the meteorite story and camping nearby.

Murchison is Nagambie's quieter sibling twenty minutes downstream: a pretty town wrapped around a bend of the Goulburn, with a main street facing the river, a winery lunch worth the drive on its own, and a genuinely odd claim to fame involving outer space.

01Lunch at Longleat

The anchor of a Murchison trip is Longleat Estates on Old Weir Road, the winery serving Italian-style set menus and share plates from local produce; book ahead, especially on long weekends, through Longleat Estates. It carries one of the best review profiles in the district, covered in our wineries guide.

02The meteorite

In 1969 a meteorite fell over Murchison, scattering fragments across the district, and the Murchison meteorite went on to become one of the most studied space rocks in the world, carrying organic compounds older than the Sun. The town wears the story proudly, and the local heritage centre tells it; check opening times before planning around it, as small-town museums keep small-town hours.

03The river

The Goulburn is Murchison's front yard: riverside walks from the main street, and the designated Crown-frontage camping country between here and Nagambie, covered with its rules in the camping guide. Anglers can treat the reach as part of the same corridor that runs down from Seymour through the Nagambie Lakes, and Waranga Basin is only a short hop further for the redfin.

04Making the trip

As a half day: drive up the river road, walk the main street, lunch at Longleat, home via the camping reaches. As a detour, it slots into any day-trip loop north. The town is small, which is the point; go for lunch and the river, not a packed itinerary.
