Waranga Basin

Fishing Waranga Basin near Rushworth: the 5,500 hectare storage half an hour from Nagambie, with redfin, golden perch, Murray cod, access, ramps and rules.

Waranga Basin is the big water in Nagambie's backyard: a 5,500 hectare irrigation storage about half an hour north, between Rushworth and Tatura, fed from the Goulburn through the canal system. Where Lake Nagambie is timber and channels, Waranga is open water and numbers, and it is the best redfin fishery within easy reach of town.

01What swims here

Goulburn-Murray Water's Waranga Basin recreation guide lists redfin, Murray spiny crayfish, trout, Murray cod and golden perch, and the redfin are the everyday story: schooling fish that reward a sounder and a drifting boat, with bags of eating-size fish the normal result rather than the lucky one. Golden perch and cod are stocked presences that turn up along the rocky walls and the canal inlet.

02Where to fish it

GMW's guide notes foreshore fishing near the canal inlet as a productive land-based option, and boats can launch from concrete ramps at several points around the Basin. Out on the water, redfin school over open ground, so the usual play is to motor, sound, and drop: bobbing soft plastics or bait once you find the school. The Basin is big and exposed, so pick your weather; a northerly across 5,500 hectares makes for a wet ride home.

03Rules and water levels

This is working irrigation storage, and levels swing with the seasons. GMW applies a 5 knot limit across the Basin when the level falls below 114.38 metres (about 20 per cent capacity), and submerged stumps become a real hazard at low water, so check current storage levels with Goulburn-Murray Water before towing up. Camping on the foreshore is not permitted outside the designated caravan park, and foreshore fires are banned.

The fishing rules are standard northern Victorian: Waranga is not among the waters exempt from the Murray cod closed season, so cod are off limits from September through November, and all limits live with the VFA. A current licence applies; see the licence guide.

04Making the trip

Waranga pairs naturally with a Nagambie base: calm-morning redfin sessions on the Basin, evening cod water back on Lake Nagambie. The lakeside caravan park covers staying by the water itself, and Murchison sits between the two for lunch. For the rest of the nearby waters, see Greens Lake and the Goulburn at Seymour.

05Common questions

Is Waranga Basin good for fishing? Yes, particularly for redfin, which school in numbers that make it the reliable family session within half an hour of Nagambie. Golden perch, cod, trout and crays round out the list per GMW's recreation guide.

Can you camp at Waranga Basin? Only at the designated lakeside caravan park. GMW does not permit camping elsewhere on the foreshore, and foreshore fires are banned.

Does the Murray cod closed season apply at Waranga Basin? Yes. Waranga is not on the VFA's exempt list, so cod are closed 1 September to 30 November, the same as Lake Nagambie. Check current rules with the VFA.
