Southeast of Nagambie the flat Goulburn Valley suddenly isn't: the Strathbogie Ranges rise as a granite tableland of boulders, bush and farm country, and Mt Wombat is its lookout. On a clear day the summit gives 360 degree views across the valley you have spent the weekend in, and the drive up through the granite country is half the outing.
01Mt Wombat lookout
Mt Wombat is the high point of the western Strathbogies, reached by road from the Euroa side with a walk up to the summit rocks and communication towers. The view takes in the Goulburn Valley to the north and the ranges rolling away south, and it is at its absolute best straight after rain clears, when the air rinses clean. Roads in the ranges include gravel sections that cut up in wet weather, so check conditions with Strathbogie Shire before committing a low-slung car.
02The granite country
The charm of the Strathbogies is the country itself: boulder-strewn paddocks, forest patches and backroads that reward an unhurried loop. Build it as a half-day circuit from Nagambie: out through Euroa (about half an hour), up into the ranges, back via the Avenel side of the Hume with a Fowles Wine stop if the timing lands at lunch.
03When to go
Autumn and spring are the sweet spots: summer heat flattens the appeal of granite country, and winter brings the mist that either ruins the lookout or makes it spectacular, with no way to know which until you are up there. After rain is the local's pick. It pairs naturally with a rainy-day plan that clears mid-afternoon.
04Common questions
How far is Mt Wombat from Nagambie? Roughly 45 minutes' drive via Euroa, depending on which way you take the ranges roads. Allow a half day with the lookout and a town stop.
Is Mt Wombat suitable for kids? The summit area involves rocks and towers rather than fenced platforms, so it suits kids who can be trusted near edges, with close supervision. The drive and a Euroa stop carry the younger ones.
Do you need a 4WD for the Strathbogies? Not in dry conditions for the main routes, but there are gravel sections, and wet weather changes the equation. Check conditions with Strathbogie Shire before you go.
