Nagambie with kids

Plan a family weekend in Nagambie with playgrounds, water play, easy walks, boat hire, kids' fishing, rainy-day ideas, food and family stays.

Nagambie works well when adults want different things from the weekend. One person can fish or row while the rest of the family stays close to the lake, parks, food and short activities.

01Start at the foreshore

Buckley Park has a playground, toilets, barbecues and a viewing platform, according to Strathbogie Shire's parks list. The nearby Black Caviar statue gives you an easy photo stop. Read our Black Caviar statue guide.

The Nagambie Foreshore Walk runs for 1.6 kilometres between the town and the Regatta Centre. The Shire describes it as an accessible path along the southern edge of the lake. See the Nagambie Foreshore Walk information.

Jacobsons Outlook, between the Black Caviar statue and the visitor centre, has a lakeside lawn and a fenced play area.

Out of town, the Goulburn Weir Recreation Reserve has a playground, covered barbecues and toilets. There is no lake or river access there. Read the Goulburn Weir guide.

02Water play and swimming

The Buckley Park splash park and playground is a summer favourite with young kids. The splash park is a free, unsupervised water play area. Children need active adult supervision. Its season and operating conditions can change, so check with Strathbogie Shire before promising it to the kids.

An inflatable water park runs on the lake near Jacobsons Outlook in summer. Tickets are required, so check before you go.

For swimming, use a place that is open and suitable on the day. Keep children away from ramps, boat lanes and the rowing course. Check the Shire's current boating and waterway rules before entering the lake.

03Easy walks and wildlife

The Tahbilk wetlands are a good change of pace from the town foreshore. Check with Tahbilk for current access before visiting.

For a shorter town option, walk part of the foreshore path and turn back when younger legs have had enough.

04Get onto the water

Go Adventure Nagambie lists kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, pedal boats and other craft for hire. Go Adventure also hires self-drive pontoons, and reviewers say big family groups fit comfortably. Check with Go Adventure Nagambie for age rules, availability and safety requirements.

Families with their own boat should read boating and water skiing on Lake Nagambie and check what's on the lake this weekend.

05Take the kids fishing

A short session is often enough. Choose a land-based place with room to step back from the edge, keep hooks under adult control and bring food as well as bait. Start with our kids' fishing spots and check the current fishing rules.

06Rainy-day plans

Wet weather does not have to cancel the day. A long lunch, a cellar door that welcomes your group or a drive through the district can fill the gap. See rainy-day ideas in Nagambie, and check with each venue before leaving.

07Family food and places to stay

For a treat, Amanda Lou's on High Street sells ice cream, thick milkshakes and pup cups for dogs.

Use the Eat and drink guide for breakfast, casual meals and places that suit a group. Check menus and bookings with each venue.

For beds, cabins or a site, compare where to stay in Nagambie, Nagambie caravan parks and the Discovery Parks Nagambie Lakes guide. Book ahead for major regatta and summer weekends.
