The first thing to know: there is no free camping on Lake Nagambie itself. The lakeshore is largely private property and town reserves, so lakeside camping means a caravan park. The free option is riverside camping on the Goulburn downstream, and it is walk-in, bare-bones and bound by real rules. Here is how both work.
01Lakeside: the caravan parks
For a powered site, a cabin or anywhere you can park beside your tent, use the parks: Discovery Parks Nagambie Lakes on the water at Loddings Lane, or Nagambie Lifestyle Park in town. The caravan parks guide compares them. Book ahead for regattas, cod season opening and summer.
02Riverside: Crown water frontage camping
Victoria allows camping at designated areas on licensed Crown water frontages along the Goulburn, and the nearest to Nagambie sits off Day Road about 12 kilometres north, towards Murchison. It is genuine bush camping: you park at the end of the road and walk about 750 metres in, there are no facilities, no campfires are allowed there, and no dogs. Cattle graze the frontage, so keep food sealed and leave gates as you find them. River camps flood. Check the forecast and river levels before committing to a riverside night, especially in spring.
03Fire rules
Campfire rules differ by site, and some designated areas prohibit fires entirely. On top of site rules, total fire bans and the fire danger period apply across the district in the warmer months. Check CFA restrictions before striking a match, and assume a gas stove is the safe default.
04What to pack
Headlamp, rod holders, a good esky and warm layers for cold nights. For the walk-in river camps, add water (there is none provided), a gas stove and a plan for rubbish, because everything walks out with you.
05Common questions
Can you camp for free at Lake Nagambie? No. The free designated camping is on the Goulburn River frontages towards Murchison, not on the lake. On the lake, the caravan parks are the camping option.
Can I have a campfire at the river camps? Not at the Day Road area, where campfires are prohibited, and never anywhere on a total fire ban day. Check the rules for the specific designated area and CFA restrictions before you go.
Can I fish from the river camps? Yes, the Goulburn frontage camps are fishing water, with the usual rules: a current licence and, in spring, the Murray cod closed season. See the licence and rules guide.
