The trick to a family fishing weekend is running two plans in parallel that meet at mealtimes. This itinerary does exactly that: the fishing crew gets the good hours, everyone else gets the better morning, and nobody waits around at a boat ramp. Check can I fish this weekend? first, and book the bed via where to stay.
01Saturday
| Time | Fishing crew | Everyone else |
|---|---|---|
| 5:30am | Launch at Buckley Park | Sleep in |
| 8:00am | Bakery pies on the boat | Bakery breakfast in town |
| 10:00am | Work the timber edges | Tahbilk Wetlands boardwalks |
| 12:30pm | Back to the ramp | Cellar door lunch at Tahbilk |
| 2:00pm | Rest | Pool at the holiday park |
| 5:00pm | Evening session together from the bank | Kids fish the foreshore |
| 7:00pm | Brewery dinner | Brewery dinner |
The fishing side runs on the hot spots guide; the family side on while they're fishing and the wetlands guide. The 5pm session is the one to do together: bank fishing at the foreshore with the kids, per kids' fishing spots, then everyone walks to the brewery.
02Sunday
| Time | Fishing crew | Everyone else |
|---|---|---|
| 6:00am | River session on the Goulburn | Coffee in town |
| 9:00am | Keep fishing | Market or playground |
| 11:00am | Pack up | Black Caviar statue and playground |
| 12:30pm | Lunch together, head home | Lunch together, head home |
If it is the fourth Sunday of the month, the farmers' market at Tahbilk is the everyone-else anchor; otherwise the foreshore and statue fill the morning. Lunch in town, then the Hume home.
03Common questions
Does this itinerary work without a boat? Yes. Swap the launches for bank sessions at Buckley Park and the foreshore, which is where the kids' fishing happens anyway. A kayak is the affordable upgrade.
What if a regatta is on? Parts or all of the lake may close for racing, which is exactly why the first step is the weekend checker. A regatta weekend can still be a great family weekend; see the regatta itinerary.
