Tahbilk has made wine on the Goulburn River since 1860, which makes it one of the oldest family wineries in Victoria, and for most of its life it was known as Chateau Tahbilk, the name many visitors still search for. It is a good half day out for a mixed group: history, wine, a wetlands walk and, once a month, a farmers' market. Use the Tahbilk website for hours, bookings and prices.
01Cellar door and the old cellars
The cellar door sits among the original 1860s buildings, and the sense of age is the point: this is working history, not a themed reproduction. Staff will take you through the range on tasting, and the estate is famous among wine people for Marsanne, a white variety Tahbilk has grown since the nineteenth century and holds in rare old plantings; ask to taste it, because almost nowhere else in the world can pour the equivalent. Check with Tahbilk for current tasting hours and prices.
02Eating there
The Tahbilk Estate Restaurant overlooks the wetlands and handles the long-lunch end of a visit; the current rating and details are in the venue listing on our wineries page. Book ahead on weekends, and expect the fourth Sunday of the month to be busy when the market runs.
03Wetlands and wildlife reserve
Next to the winery is a wetlands and wildlife reserve with a walking trail and boardwalk. It is the easiest way to keep kids busy while adults taste. See our Tahbilk wetlands guide.
04River cruises
Cruises on the Goulburn have run from the wetlands. See Goulburn River cruise and check with the operator for times.
05Nagambie Farmers' Market
The Nagambie Farmers' Market is held at Tahbilk, usually on the fourth Sunday of the month, with local fruit and vegetables, meat, bread and makers. Check the market page for the next date before you go.
06Dogs
Tahbilk says dogs on leads are welcome in the outdoor spaces, but not on the decks. Check with Tahbilk before you bring one.
07Getting there and nearby
Tahbilk is at 254 Oneils Road, about ten minutes' drive from Nagambie. If you are tasting, sort a driver first. Pair it with Mitchelton, or see all Nagambie wineries.
08Common questions
Is Tahbilk the same as Chateau Tahbilk? Yes. The estate traded as Chateau Tahbilk for generations before simplifying the name to Tahbilk. Same winery, same family, same site since 1860.
What is Tahbilk famous for? Longevity and Marsanne: one of Victoria's oldest family wineries, with historic underground cellars and rare old Marsanne plantings that made the variety the estate's signature.
Is Tahbilk good for kids? Better than most wineries. The wetlands walk and open grounds give kids something real to do while adults taste, and the market Sundays add animals-and-stalls appeal. Keep tastings short all the same.
