GoFish Nagambie history

The story of the GoFish Nagambie fishing festival: the 2019 launch, the $500,000 prize pool, the COVID years, and what stands at the lake today.

Before this website was a visitor guide, GoFish Nagambie was a fishing festival, and for a few years it was the biggest thing in Australian freshwater fishing. This page tells that story. To be clear up front: this site is an independent guide and is not run by the former event organisers.

01Early days

Fishing competitions have drawn crowds to Lake Nagambie for generations. The lake's combination of stocked natives, easy access and a town built along the water made it a natural venue long before anyone attached a festival to it.

02The GoFish years

GoFish Nagambie launched in 2019 as Australia's richest freshwater fishing tournament, with a prize pool of $500,000 and backing from the Victorian Government. It paired a catch-and-release tournament across more than 30 kilometres of the Nagambie waterways with a festival hub at the Regatta Centre: expo, entertainment and family programming alongside the fishing. The inaugural event drew anglers from across the country.

COVID interrupted the run, and the event returned in March 2021 before running again in 2022. No further edition has been announced since, and as of late 2026 the festival has not returned.

03What it left behind

The event put Nagambie on the national fishing map and left a real legacy: heavier stocking attention on the lake, a generation of anglers who discovered the water through the tournament, and a name that people still search for. The fishery itself is in good shape; our fishing guide covers what swims here now, and the cod season opening guide covers the biggest weekend on the current calendar.

04Today

This website is an independent visitor guide that took on the name after the event era. We are not affiliated with the former organisers, we do not sell tournament tickets, and we have no inside word on the event's future. What we do is keep the practical side current: where to fish, where to stay and what's on the lake.

05Common questions

Is GoFish Nagambie coming back? No future event has been announced as of late 2026. If that changes, the announcement will come from the event's organisers, not this site; we will link to it if it happens.

What was the GoFish Nagambie prize pool? The tournament launched with a $500,000 cash and prize pool, billed at the time as Australia's richest freshwater fishing competition.

Can I still fish the GoFish waters? Yes, the water never went anywhere. The tournament zone was the everyday fishery: Lake Nagambie and the Goulburn, covered in our fishing guide.
