Getting to Nagambie

How to get to Nagambie: around 90 minutes from Melbourne via the Hume, V/Line trains on the Shepparton line, towing notes, fuel and phone reception.

Nagambie sits about 120 kilometres north of Melbourne, and the trip is one of the easiest regional runs in Victoria: freeway nearly the whole way, with the lake arriving almost as soon as the town does.

01By car

Allow around an hour and a half from Melbourne: Hume Freeway north, then the Goulburn Valley Highway into town. Outside long-weekend peaks the run is painless; on the Friday night of a holiday weekend, add time for the Hume crawl out of the city. High Street is the highway through town, so you arrive in the middle of everything.

02By train

V/Line trains on the Shepparton line stop at Nagambie station, which puts a car-free weekend genuinely on the table: the station is a walk from High Street, the motels and the foreshore. Services are limited each day, so check the current V/Line timetable and plan around it. Coming without a car works best for a town-based stay; the wineries then need a taxi, tour or a generous friend.

03Towing a boat

The Hume is the easy part; the detail that matters is arrival. Fuel up at the Astron servo on High Street or before the Hume turn-off, check the boat ramps and zones guide for which ramp suits your rig, and on big weekends launch early, because ramp queues before dawn are real on the first weekend of cod season and summer Saturdays. The lake's rules (20 knots, anti-clockwise) are in boating and water skiing.

04Phone reception

Fine in town, patchy in spots along the river and backwaters. Download offline maps and the guides you need before leaving coverage, and tell someone your plan if you are fishing remote stretches alone.
