First cod setup

What to buy for your first Murray cod lure setup: baitcast vs spin, rod and reel specs, braid and leader, and honest budget bands from starter to serious.

A first cod setup gets one job: cast lures to timber all day and stop a strong fish from reaching it. You can do that properly from a few hundred dollars, and this guide is the honest version of what to buy, without the tackle-wall overwhelm.

01Baitcast or spin

Cod fishing is a baitcaster's game in the long run (better casting accuracy to structure, more winching power, and it balances the heavier lures), but a quality spin outfit is the easier start and entirely capable. If you already fish spin for other species, start there and switch later. If you are committing to cod, learn the baitcaster from day one and accept a weekend of birds' nests as the tuition fee.

02The rod and reel

For a baitcast setup: a rod around 5'10" to 6'6" rated roughly 6 to 10 kilograms, matched to a low-profile baitcast reel. For spin: a 6'2" to 7' rod in a similar rating with a 4000 to 5000 size reel. Either way the rod should have grunt in the bottom half and enough tip to cast a half-ounce spinnerbait, because at Nagambie you will be casting at drowned timber all day and pulling fish away from it fast.

03Line and leader

Braid main line around 30 to 50 pound, to a leader of 40 to 60 pound hard-wearing monofilament or fluorocarbon about a rod-length long. That sounds heavy for a 55 to 75 centimetre slot fish until the first one wraps you around a red gum. Check your leader for scuffs after every fish and every snag; timber fishing eats leaders.

04Honest budget bands

A capable starter outfit (rod, reel, braid, leader) lands around $250 to $400 using mainstream brands. The sweet spot where gear stops being the limiting factor is roughly $450 to $700. Beyond that you are buying refinement, not fish. Put any spare budget into lures and quality split rings and trebles instead; see must-have lures for cod opening.

05The extras that matter

Strong pliers, a lip grip or big net, an environet-style mesh if you can get one, and a brag mat for measuring against the slot. The slot limit means measuring accurately is not optional, and good handling gear is part of releasing fish well.

06Common questions

How much should I spend on a first cod setup? $250 to $400 buys genuinely capable gear. Spend more only once you know you will use it; spend the savings on lures and licences.

Is a baitcaster necessary for Murray cod? No, a 4000 to 5000 spin outfit with 30 to 50 pound braid does the job. Baitcasters win on accuracy and winching power, which is why most committed cod anglers end up with one.

What line should I use for cod at Nagambie? Braid around 30 to 50 pound with a 40 to 60 pound leader. The fish do not demand it; the timber does.
